Feature · Local-first

Your notes are plain .md files. Forever.

Human-readable, git-friendly, tool-agnostic. Edit them in any app, version them with git, grep them from a terminal. Uninstall MDDock tomorrow and lose nothing — that's the whole point.

How it works

Any document → Markdown → any output

MDDock turns your files into searchable, linkable, version-controlled plain text first. Then it works for you.

Import anything

Word, PDF, PowerPoint, Excel, EPUB, web pages → clean Markdown, with metadata preserved in frontmatter.

Markdown is the source

Your files are no longer binary black boxes. Every note is plain text you can search, link, and sync with git or Dropbox.

Export anywhere

The same .md files become Office documents, Marp slides, web pages, or PDF, only when humans need familiar formats.

AI can actually read it

LLMs answer from your Markdown notes, cite your past judgments, and write drafts that stay in your vault.

Vibe Work

Prompt to document in seconds

Type what you need, MDDock generates a full Markdown document, then exports to any format.

Frequently asked questions

What does local-first actually mean?+
Your notes live on your disk as plain Markdown files, and every feature works offline. Sync and sharing are optional add-ons, not the foundation — the app never holds your writing hostage behind a login or a network.
Where exactly are my notes stored?+
In a folder you choose, visible in Finder or Explorer like any other documents. Open them with any editor, back them up with any tool, grep them from the terminal — they are just files.
Does MDDock work offline?+
Fully. Editing, search, AI memory indexing, the TUI and Office import/export all run locally. The only features that need a network are the optional cloud sync, sharing and publishing.
How is this different from Notion?+
Notion stores your writing in their cloud, in their format, behind their login. MDDock stores it on your disk as Markdown you own. See the full comparison at /compare/notion.
Can I sync with iCloud, Dropbox or git instead?+
Yes. Because a vault is just a folder of Markdown files, any file-sync tool works — iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Syncthing, or plain git. MDDock's own cloud is there if you want zero-setup sync and sharing, not because you're locked out of alternatives.
